When Should My Child See A Dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry states that children should begin seeing a dentist at least by his or her first birthday. Between six to 12 months of age, your child’s teeth will begin to erupt until they are fully grown by the time they reach age three. This means that they should start practicing a good oral hygiene routine to make sure their teeth are progressing properly and stay in great health.

Smile Reston Heights can help your child learn more about his or her teeth to make their daily dental routine more exciting and fun! Contact our dental practice to schedule an appointment that’s most convenient for you.

Healthy Oral Hygiene Habits to Practice

Brushing can be fun especially when you know your child is doing it right! It’s important to know that sugary foods and liquids target new teeth, so here is a list of good oral hygiene habits you and your child should practice when their first tooth erupts:

  • Examine your child’s teeth every two weeks to make sure their teeth are progressing well. If any lines and discoloration due to decay are apparent, contact our dental practice immediately so our dentists can assess future steps.
  • Make sure your child is brushing at least two to three times a day for optimal oral hygiene including after each meal and before bed.
  • Brush with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.

Keep Your Child’s Teeth in Great Health

Children are at a higher risk of experiencing tooth decay since most of them may not be familiar with practicing a proper dental hygiene routine. With daily brushing and flossing routines as well as visiting the dentist regularly, your child will obtain a smile that boosts their confidence as they continue to grow.
